GOLDEN TRAILS  (21925)  **--Prospector Jack Remsen has hit a mother lode of hard luck: He can't pay the mortgage on his mine, and the skinflint repossessing it demands Jack's beloved horse as an additional penalty. When Jack angrily rides off on his own horse, he's branded a thief and hunted by the law. Although a wanted man, Jack remains in the territory because of his promise to look after the daughter of his late mining partner. The young beauty Jack thinks is his partner's daughter is actually the daughter of Jack's bitter enemy, the skinflint!

PIONEERS OF THE WEST  (1927)  **--As a foreword to this low-budget silent western intones, "Perhaps the most important step in the early stages of the settlement of the Far West was the establishment of the historic Pony Express in 1859." One of the bravest of the riders, "Pony Bob" Haslam (Dick Carter) gets in trouble with the Piutes, whose chief, Black Eagle (Olin Francis), has come under the influence of a greedy white renegade, Aleck Harvey (Bud Osborne). The latter is not only after a shipment of gold but also Bright Feather (Dorothy Earle), a white girl abducted in childhood by the Indians. Much to the consternation of the chief's previous favorite, the scheming Moonlight (Gene Crosby), Black Eagle wants to make Bright Feather his squaw but the girl has fallen in love with "Pony Bob," "the only real man of her race she has ever seen," as a title explains. When forced to pick either Black Eagle or Harvey, Bright Feather chooses a third option: to take her own life. Will Bob be in time to rescue the distressed damsel? Produced in the late 1910s-very early 1920s but not released until 1927, this independently made Western bears no resemblance to the 1929 oater of the same title

CORTEZ, RICARDO
PONY EXPRESS  (1925)  **--James Cruze attempted to follow up the success of THE COVERED WAGON with this rousing story of the founding of the Pony Express in the early days of the Civil War. Plenty of talent is entertainingly displayed, from Wallace Beery at his coyest, Ricardo Cortez as the hero, Ernest Torrence as a loony Bible-thumper, George Bancroft as the sly villain, and the ever-delightful Betty Compson to excellent camera-work by Karl Brown.

WOLF TRACKS  (1923)  **--
Rising Western star Jack Hoxie's penultimate effort for Poverty Row company Sunset, Wolf's Tracks was a typically threadbare little silent Western about two young strangers -- Jack Hastings (Jack Hoxie) and Jean Meredith (Andree Tourneur) -- inheriting one-half of a map to a hidden gold mine. A villain, Wolf Santell (Albert J. Smith), steals Jack's half of the map, which is enclosed in a locket, only to lose it again in the river. In one of those coincidences found only in a cheap melodrama, the locket is found by Jack, who is soon pursued by the villain, his mistress (Marin Sais, Hoxie's wife in real life), and a local gambler (William Lester), all wanting their share of the treasure. About to be knifed by the gambler, Jack is saved by Jean's supposedly dead grandfather (James Welch). His contract with Sunset producer Anthony J. Xydias coming to an end, Hoxie quickly signed with Universal, becoming that studio's number two Western star after the inimitable Hoot Gibson.

CAT AND THE CANARY  (1927)  **--The Cat and the Canary (1927) is an American silent horror film adaptation of John Willard's 1922 black comedy play of the same name. Directed by German Expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni, the film stars Laura La Plante as Annabelle West, Forrest Stanley as Charles "Charlie" Wilder, and Creighton Hale as Paul Jones. The plot revolves around the death of Cyrus West, who is Annabelle, Charlie, and Paul's uncle, and the reading of his will 20 years later. Annabelle inherits her uncle's fortune, but when she and her family spend the night in his haunted mansion they are stalked by a mysterious figure.
