SINGING COWBOYS ON THE TRAIL
The flavor, the music and the FUN of the West are all captured in this quintet of vintage short subjects.
CALGARY COWBOY STAMPEDE: Thrilling footage shot at this yearly Canadian event, publicized as The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. Highlights include Brahma bull riding, calf-roping, a chuckwagon race and even Slim Pickens as a death-defying rodeo clown.
ON THE TRAIL: Tenderfoot tourists enjoy the simple pleasures of the frontier - and an exciting wildcat hunt.
RANCHO LIFE: Watch as a vast ranch is established in 1835 Spanish California. Oxen plow the land and vaqueros round up cattle, brand calves and make their own elaborate lariats.
SONGS OF THE PRARIE: A group of roundup-weary cowpokes do a bit of vocalizing. Among them is veteran Western bad guy (and future Frankenstein Monster) Glenn Strange!
THE SINGING COWBOYS: Hard-ridin' buckaroos provide a series of musical numbers... amidst much clowning and lasso-spinning.

FIGHTERS OF THE SADDLE  (1929)  (SILENT)  **--Henry Weatherby is buying up ranch land to sell as right of way for a new road. When he sends his son Dick and his nephew Pete to kick the Wayne's off their ranch, Dick rebels and joins the Wayne's in their fight against his father.

INVADERS, THE  (1929  SILENT)  **--In this western, a wagon train is massacred by Indians and the only survivors are two children, a brother and a sister. They take the girl, adopt her into the tribe and name her "Black Fawn." Meanwhile, the cavalry saves the boy. He grows up to join them. Eventually the siblings are reunited after the boy thwarts an attack.

WHITE OUTLAW, THE   (1929 SILENT) **  Known as the White Outlaw for the kerchief he wears, Johnny Douglas decides to go straight. Getting a job as a cowhand he gives the kerchief to his new friend Ted Williams. When the rancher's daughter, the girl friend of Ted, agrees to marry the man holding the note on the ranch so he won't foreclose, Ted uses the kerchief when he robs the stage. When Ted is spotted and jailed, Johnny has a plan to return the money and clear Ted.

ACUFF, ROY
GRANDE OLE OPRY  (1940)   **--Abner Weaver, a small-town mayor in the Ozarks, through the music of performers from 'The Grand Ole Opry," and the antics and help of his family and the local citizens, manages to pass a legislative bill to help the farmers, and also wins the election for state government from a group of crooked politicians.
HOME IN SAN ANTONE--(1948)  **
NIGHT TRAIN TO MEMPHIS  **
SING NEIGHBOR SING  (1949)  **--
Brad Taylor, Republic's newest leading man (after a long tenure at Columbia as "Stanley Brown"), heads the cast of the bucolic musical Sing, Neighbor, Sing. Taylor plays wolf-in-sheep's-clothing Bob Reed, who poses as an elderly English psychologist in order to fleece the populace of a backwoods community and woo the pretty young ladies. When the genuine psychologist (Charles Irwin), shows up, Reed is in deep you-know-what, but heroine Virginia Blake (Ruth Terry) loves him anyway. Featured country-western performers include Roy Acuff and His Smoky Mountain Boys, Lulubelle and Scotty, the Milo Twins and Carolina Cotton. Republic specialized in this sort of cornpone fare throughout the 1930s and 1940s, thrilling the hinterlands while aggravating the so-called sophisticates.

SHOOTOUT AT BIG SAG  **--
In this western, originally designed as the pilot of a television show that never made it to air, a self-designated preacher desires to control the Big Sag territory of Montana. To do this, he must first force two newly arrived Texans off of their land. Meanwhile, the preacher's wife knows that he is too yellow-bellied to actually do the dirty deed. She sends their lovely daughter to town with a note for the owner of the local saloon. During the journey, the girl is caught in a big storm. She weathers it out with the Texan's son. Naturally the two fall in love, but this does not stop the girl from continuing on to deliver the note to the lecherous proprietor who immediately begins making a play for the innocent young girl. His lasciviousness pushes his alcoholic wife over the brink and in a jealous rage she fatally shoots him. It is then revealed that the greedy saloonkeeper has hired a gunslinger. The gunslinger ends up killed by the preacher, who then officiates the wedding ceremony for his daughter and his rival's son. Afterward he solemnly swears to never again use a gun.

Before it became the Oklahoma Territory, Rance Hudson, a crooked eastern-financier, schemes to steal their land from the ranchers for a railroad right-of-way. Clint Farrell returns from law school to find many of his friends illegally jailed by Hudsonm and his boyhood pal, Sheriff Bob Reynolds, unable to cope with the situation. Clint takes matters in his own capable hands, rounds up some fighting-mad ranchers, and plans and executes the complete routing of Hudson and his henchmen.

COBURN, BUCK
GUNSMOKE  (1933)  **--Gun Smoke was the second of a brace of "B"-westerns starring the now-forgotten Buck Coburn. The plot is as standard as standard can be: Rancher George Culverson (Henry Hall) and daughter Jean (Marion Shilling) are menaced by villains Sneed (Philo McCullough) and McGee (Bud Osborne). Hero Steve Branning (Coburn), riding out of nowhere, comes to the Culverson's rescue. The desperate baddies kidnap the heroine, but Steve brings her back home safe and sound after making with the fists and six-guns. Benny Corbett, vilified by many western fans as the least funniest "comedy relief" in film history, actually garners a few laughs. Like the first Buck Coburn …

COOPER, JACKIE
LONE COWBOY  (1933)  **--Adapted by director Paul Sloan from the novel by Will James, Lone Cowboy is an "outdoors" epic tailored to the talents of young Jackie Cooper. Actually the title character is not played by Cooper but by character actor Addison Richards, cast as a grizzled old rodeo rider named Dobe Jones. Placed in charge of Eastern lad Scooter O'Neal (Cooper), Dobe forms a strong friendship with the kid, but this does not dissuade him from his main purpose in life -- to track down his runaway wife Eleanor

COPELAND, KENNETH
COVENANT RIDER  (1994)
**--
Two U.S. marshals (Willie George, Kenneth Copeland) track outlaws who have kidnapped one's 6-year-old nephew.

GUNSLINGER  (1991)  **
--
Two years ago, Robert "Wichita Slim" Owens was released from prison after serving time for bank robbery in Dry Gulch. During his sentence, Owens accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, remaining on "the right side of the law" ever since. On his way to be awarded a position with the United States Marshal Service, "Slim" (as many call him) crosses paths with his former outlaw partner Dawson McClure, now heading a new gang of his own. Escorting a preacher and his family to Dry Gulch, Owens is made a U.S. Marshal, only for the ceremony to be interrupted by McClure's gang. Hit from behind after a confrontation with hotshot gunman "Lightning" Johnny Silvers, Slim begins suffering from amnesia, and returns to his outlaw ways. Made a Territorial Ranger by the Governor, "Gospel Bill" is granted 15 days to bring Owens back...dead or alive.

TREASURE OF EAGLE MOUNTAIN  **--
The Treasure of Eagle Mountain is full of surprising twists and turns_a compelling story of God's love and forgiveness. Once again, Willie George and Kenneth Copeland have teamed up to tell a dynamic Western story. The Treasure of Eagle Mountain is about bitterness and revenge, forgiveness and reconciliation. Chad Keeler hates his father for abandoning him when he was a boy of ten. His father, Alonzo, has become a believer but doesn't know how to reach out to his son. To make matters worse, a group of gold-hungry thieves set out to kill him for the treasure map that he determines to use as a peace offering with his son. Is there really gold in the Wichita Mountains? Is Keeler's map for real or is it another one of his irresponsible stunts?

PONY EXPRESS  (1925)  **--
James Cruze attempted to follow up the success of THE COVERED WAGON with this rousing story of the founding of the Pony Express in the early days of the Civil War. Plenty of talent is entertainingly displayed, from Wallace Beery at his coyest, Ricardo Cortez as the hero, Ernest Torrence as a loony Bible-thumper, George Bancroft as the sly villain, and the ever-delightful Betty Compson to excellent camera-work by Karl Brown.

The surprisingly sympathetic tale of a Navajo man, Wing Foot (Richard Dix), who was taken from his family as a boy and raised in a boarding school. Insulted and referred to as “Redskin” by his college peers, Wing Foot also finds that he no longer fits in with his family, especially his extremely traditional father. Will Wing Foot be able to bridge the gap between the culture of his birth and the culture in which he was raised?

The fort's commanding Officer wants peace but the rules say the men must be tried in a white man's court leaving the Indians no choice but to attack.

Their feud does nothing to help the romance of Saunders' son, Sheriff Ron Saunders and Atkins' daughter, Susan . The opposition to the dam that Saunders has led, makes him the prime suspect when the banker who is going to lend Atkins the money for the project is murdered, and Sheriff Saunders is forced to arrest his father. But Steve Brandon, mostly in his guise as the Durango Kid, does a bit of snooping and begins to suspect that the local storekeeper has an interest in more than just selling groceries.

A MAN'S GAME   (1934)   (NON WESTERN)  **--
Again forsaking his traditional western garb, Tim McCoy plays a rough-and-ready fireman in Columbia's A Man's Game. During one blaze, Tim and his partner Dave (Ward Bond) rescue pretty stenographer Judy (Evelyn Knapp). Falling in love with the girl, the boys try to save her from getting mixed up in an embezzlement scheme. The plot requires Judy to set off a fire herself to rout the villains, which of course also brings Tim and Dave back into the picture.

WAY OF THE WEST  (1934)  **--
This B-grade western from director Robert Emmett Tansey stars Bobby Nelson, Jimmy Aubrey and William Desmond, in its tale of beleaguered cattle rangers, forced by circumstance to do battle with irritating shepherds whose sheep are systematically eating away all remaining grazing land. Badly in need of a foreman, Dad Parker (Fred Parker) turns to burly cowpoke Wally Gordon (Hal Taliaferro), who has earned his loyalty and trust by rescuing Dad's daughter, Fiery (Myrla Bratton) from imminent danger. Meanwhile, Cash Horton (Desmond) grows hellbent on driving the Parkers off of the land. Wally gets framed for murder and then thrown behind bars, which enables Horton to harass Wally's friends unchecked.

RIDER OF DEATH VALLEY  **--A semi-sequel to Tom Mix's 1932 Destry Rides Again, Rider of Death Valley finds Mix protecting the gold-mine claim of little Edith Fellows. Fellows' father has met his end at the hands of villain Fred Kohler. Kohler confronts Mix in the wastes of Death Valley, hoping to leave Mix to perish beneath the merciless sun. In a climax reminiscent of Erich Von Stroheim's Greed, both men struggle over a half-empty canteen of water, as leading lady Lois Wilson looks on helplessly. Rider of Death Valley was the second of silent western hero Tom Mix's talking features for Universal, though it was released fourth.
RIDERS OF THE DESERT   (1932)  **--Bill Joyce (Willard Robertson) is killed after discovering gold, leaving cowboy Tom Rigby (Tom Mix) to guard the map to the mine and Bill's young daughter, Betty (Edith Fellows). When Bill's sister, Helen (Lois Wilson), arrives, Tom must protect the two women from Lew Grant (Fred Kohler) and Doc Larribee (Forrest Stanley), who he suspects murdered Bill. Tearing the dead man's map into three pieces to divide between him, the women and the bandits, Tom forces everyone to work together.

FIGHTING MAD  **--Royal Canadian Mountie Renfrew (Newill) tangles with gangster Cardigan (Stone), with the help of his young sidekick Kelly (O'Brien) in the second of the "Renfrew Of The Mounties" series. Ann (Blaine) had witnessed a bank robbery, so the robbers kidnapped and took her with them, locking her in a trailer with the loot. The trailer's hitch loosens, and it plunges into the lake. Sergeant Refrew rescues Ann out of the water, but she gives him a false name, afraid he will send her back to the authorities, who want her as a material witness to the robbery. Renfrew and Ann are captured by the gang of robbers, headed by gangster Cardigan, who wants to know what Ann did with the money. It's up to Constable Kelly to concoct a plan to save the day.

RENEGADES  (1946)  **--
"Renegades" is somewhat of a precursor to the so-called adult westerns of the 1950's in that it examines the characters of the leads in minute detail. It is better than many of the later adult westerns in that there is also several magnificently staged action sequences including the standard one by this time of horses leaping over a cliff into a body of water. This stunt first gained notoriety as a result of its use in the popular Republic feature "Dark Command" in which a whole team of horses jump into the water from high above. It was one of the reasons for the close scrutiny today when animals are used in movies to make sure none are injured or mistreated

Elsie Barlow, his niece, has recently arrived from England to look after the lumber yards they jointly own. There are several suspects and the killer's identity is well concealed. But Sergeant Strange narrows it down.

LAW OF THE WOLF  (1941)  **
Carl Pearson has been wrongly convicted of killing his brother. With the help of another convict, he breaks out of prison to try to clear his name and to try to find some valuable plans left behind by his dead brother. But Pearson is being pursued both by the police and by the actual killer.
NIGHT CRY  **--
The Night Cry was a tailor-made vehicle for canine star Rin-Tin-Tin, who at the time was Warner Bros.' most valuable commodity. In this one, Rinty is falsely accused of being a sheepkiller and spends the rest of the picture proving his innocence. On the verge of being killed by an angry mob, our hound-dog hero redeems himself by rescuing his master's baby daughter from a huge, predatory condor

RETURN OF RIN TIN TIN  **-
-Actually it's Rin Tin Tin III, grandson of the legendary silent-movie canine star. Filmed in less than glorious Vitacolor, Return of Rin Tin Tin stars Donald Woods as an American priest assigned to a postwar European mission. Bobby Blake (later Baretta star Robert Blake) is a young war orphan whose harrowing experiences have soured him on mankind. Father Woods brings the boy to America, but the lad is still unapproachable until he befriends Rin Tin Tin. The dog restores the boy's zest for living and faith in humanity. A villain threatens to take the dog away, but all ends happily (and tearfully). While not on a par

TEST, THE  **
TRACKED  (1928)  **--
One of Rin Tin Tin's many canine imitators, Ranger, starred in this silent Western melodrama as a sheep dog falsely accused of "sheepicide." Outraged local sheep ranchers attempt to drown the dog, but he is saved by his owner, Jed Springer (Sam Nelson), and hidden away in a cave in the hills. Evidence later proves the dog to be innocent. Nelson was Ranger's owner and trainer

A former Confederate robs stagecoaches to be able to give money to the local poor people. He soon runs into a gang of robbers who don't have the same good intentions he does.
BUFFALO GUN  **--
In this western, the Indians claim that their government rations are being stolen and they threaten to fight back. A pair of agents look into it and bring the culprits to justice.
FROM NASHVILLE WITH MUSIC  **--In this FICTIONAL film, filled with FICTIONAL people doing FICTIONAL things, Mabel (
Marilyn Maxwell) and Arnold (Leo G. Carroll), a couple of sophisticated swells from New York City, are on one of their annual 'See American First' tours. They are traveling bu auto and get stranded on a road in a rural part of Tennessee. Marty Robbins (Marty Robbins) and his musicians and crew, en route to Nashville, stop their bus, help them get on their way and give them tickets to the Grand Ole Opry, which Mabel thinks is a grand old opera. Arnold becomes fascinated by the country music and accepts an offer from Marty to take a trip with him and his musicians. Along the way, Arnold becomes the manager of Jose Gonzales-Gonzales (Jose Gonzales-Gonzales), who has decided he is a show producer. The group then engages in the production of a country-western music show.
GUNS OF A STRANGER  **--   Forced in the line of duty to kill a young Abilene gunman, Sheriff Matthew Roberts (
Marty Robbins)is torn by inner anguish and takes off his bade and leaves Kansas. Time passes and Roberts is known as 'The Drifter', wandering restlessly through the west. In Arizona, he aids an elderly rancher, Tom Duncan (Chill Wills), and his granddaughter, Virginia (Dovie Beams) and her kid-brother Danny (Steven Tackett) in their fight to save their small ranch from a crooked banker and his gang of outlaws.
ROAD TO NASHVILLE  (1967)  **--
Doodles Weaver finally gets a break at the Hollywood studio he works for; the big boss J.B. (Richard Arlen) sends him to Nashville to round up talent for an upcoming movie about country music. The bumbling bumpkin is shown around town by singing star Connie Smith, who introduces him to some of Nashville's finest artists. Marty Robbins sings a number of tunes and shows off his race car, indulging in a few hair-raising laps at high velocity. Legendary names such as Johnny Cash, the Carter Family, Porter Wagoner, and Waylon Jennings perform some of their big hits in recording studios and on television stages. Unfortunately, Weaver has so much fun watching the rehearsals that he neglects to get the contracts signed, which causes J.B. to repeatedly blow his stack. Other notable country & western stars who appear include Hank Snow, the Stoneman Family, Webb Pierce, Kitty Wells, Faron Young, Lefty Frizzell, Dottie West, the Osbourne Brothers, and Bill Anderson.

Breslins (Jake, Emma, three boys, and nubile daughter) cross the plains in a covered wagon, then pause in a lawless western town where Jake is shot by gunslingers Arn and Jud. But folksy Judge Copeland persuades them to go on. At Break Wagon Hill, their wagon does the obvious and they homestead on the spot. We follow their trials and joys and those of neighbors, the Bascombs. Finally, violence reappears in the form of a pair of rustlers...our old friends Arn and Jud.

BORDER ROMANCE  (1930)  **--A well-staged battle between two wild horses became the centerpiece in this early musical Western starring diminutive Mexican actress Armida. She plays the owner of a hacienda who takes in a fugitive (Don Terry) from the Mexican authorities. Terry, of course, is completely innocent in the charge of horse stealing and gets a chance to clear his good name when Armida's ranch becomes a target for the real rustlers. Produced by the penny-pinching Lester F. Scott, Jr., Border Romance came complete with a sentimental theme song written by Will Jason and Val Burton. Scott, however, wanted his money's worth and the theme, according to the New York Times was "heard on the sands of the desert, in adobe huts, at fiestas, during horse raids and after every meal!"
